The first venture of Dowding and Mills was the partnership with Hamilton & Dickson in Brisbane, Australia in 1982, which now trades as Dickson Dowding & Mills. The company's subsequent growth confirmed Dowding & Mills' ambitions for working on an international scale. In order to meet set objectives, the Company sought ways of increasing its competitiveness in the market place. One way is to ensure immediate availability of copper strip to effect a rewind, which has given Dowding & Mills an advantage in the UK. A copper rolling mill commissioned in Brisbane, similar to that in the UK, gives the Australian operation these same benefits, over its competitors, as its European counterparts. It is this level of investment, together with future acquisitions, which will ensure Dowding & Mills' place as a leading repair company in Australia.

In 1992, the Company established a significant presence in North America through the acquisition of Equipment Maintenance Services, Inc (EMS). Dowding & Mills, plc, the largest publicly-traded independent electrical, mechanical and calibration services company in the world, was looking for many years for a "North American Flagship" operation. Dowding & Mills chose EMS as the entity to build upon for their entrance into the largest repair market in the world, North America. All these branches are located in significant industrial areas to ensure they are well placed to give fast and effective service. EMS specializes in a wide range of mechanical, machining, welding, electrical rotating repairs, hydraulic cylinder repairs and re-manufacturing, chroming, grinding and on-site construction services for clients in the mining, power generation, petro-chemical, steel and heavy manufacturing business sectors. Since 1984, one of the initial founders, Eric B.
