EMS History

1984 - EMS is founded.
EMS FoundedEquipment Maintenance Services, Inc. (EMS) began with three employees on the payroll and annual sales revenues of $130,000. Our dream was clear. To be the leading company of our kind in all of the West. Our primary business was to serve the coal mining and power generation industries in Gillette, Wyoming.

1986 - Gillette, Wyoming grows.
Our competition was formidable. The likes of large multi-national manufacturers and service providers were Goliaths to a company like EMS. But we dreamed. And we knew one thing - dreams are achieved by people. We knew that, in this business, people are the driving force. So we assembled the best. The best welders, machinists, mechanics, winders, schedulers, engineers, service representatives and managers. And, together we made a pledge, to ourselves and our customer partners with our team developed

Our Mission Statement became the rallying concept around which we committed to deliver quality and service unparalleled in our business. To deliver on time and to keep our word. To work as a team for the advancement of all. And, to improve, in all ways we serve our clients, every day and every year.

1987 - Phoenix, Arizona operations are started.
The price of copper was at an all time low. It was down around 50 cents a pound. Copper companies were looking for ways to improve their operating costs. We had developed an number of innovative repair procedures on motorized wheels and other components and conducted a survey of the southwest mining companies related to services which they were receiving from their present suppliers. We conducted a simple market study and began our first branch operation in Phoenix, Arizona. The Phoenix shop began as an empty 90,000 square foot building with 25 ton cranes on 8 acres of land. Steel manufacturing was at an all time low and many manufacturing facilities in the mid-west were shut down. We bought equipment from auctions and moved it into the empty building and set it up. Today, over 100 people work in the Phoenix facility and it serves as our company headquarters.

1989 - Farmington, New Mexico operations are
acquired. Original Farmington ShopAn opportunity presented itself when the former General Electric Apparatus Service Shop in Farmington, New Mexico was going to be divested. We bought this shop in a negotiation which took less than a week to complete. Since then, we have grown this business which serves the coal mining, electric utility and energy business in the four corners region of the west. The Farmington, New Mexico shop is now located in a new purpose built premises and remains a steady performer in our group.

EMS was named number 24 on the Inc. Magazine list of the 500 fastest growing companies in the United States.
1992 - Dowding and Mills, plc acquires EMS.
Dowding & Mills, plc, the largest publicly-traded independent electrical, mechanical and calibration services company in the world, head-quartered in Birmingham, England, was looking for many years for a "North American Flagship" operation. Dowding & Mills chose EMS as the entity to build upon for their entrance into the largest repair market in the world, North America. Since 1992, one of the initial founders, Eric B. Hooper, (Executive Vice President and COO of EMS) remains with the company and oversee the growth and development of the North American operations. Dowding & Mills, plc is traded on the London Stock Exchange and has a "Blue Chip" investment consideration on that exchange.

EMS is named as a recognized supplier by Phelps Dodge Corporation at the Supplier Appreciation Luncheon on November 3, 1994 at Phoenix Country Club.

EMS, Farmington, New Mexico is given a Preferred
Vender Partner AwardVendor Partner Award from BHP Minerals in recognition of the contribution the branch has made in support of the Navajo, San Juan and La Plata mines.
